5 Things To Know About Freelance Speech Writing Jobs

Speech writers create speeches for other people, such as politicians and other public figures. As with many careers today, there are some freelance jobs available for speech writers, and this article has five important things you need to know about this career path.

Writing for oration is not the same as writing for paper

Writing speeches is very different from writing for printed pieces, so you may want to familiarize yourself with some tips and techniques commonly used in the field. There are a number of good books and online articles on the topic to help you along. In addition, you may want to read all your work aloud before submitting it, as the written word doesn’talways translate into the spoken word very well. This way you can hear where the piece doesn’t sound natural and fluid.

Formal education helps

Having some formal education is not mandatory to becoming a freelance speech writer, but it can help quite a bit. Employers do seem to prefer candidates who have a bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as public relations or English. If you don’t have any tertiary education, you may want to consider taking a few courses on the topic at your local college. There are also many online courses that you can take, some of which are free.

The first speech you write will be the most difficult

As with any new endeavour, the first piece you write will be the hardest. Don’t be discouraged if you find yourself struggling to do your first project. Rather remember that as you become more familiar with the process, it will get easier. Of course, if you have any experience in the field, this won’t be a problem for you, as you’ve already completed your first project.

You’ll need to do a fair amount of research

You’ll probably need to do quite a lot of research for a number of projects you do, as the topics may vary from project to project. For this reason, you need to be willing and able to do good research.

Most of your work will be in public relations

As a freelance speech writer, most of your speech writing jobs will probably be in the field of public relations; so a background in it will be very useful. If you’re unfamiliar with the field, you can do a few courses, or even just some reading to prepare yourself for your future career.
